At Leopard Förlag, we publish books that focus on news coverage, debate, history and popular science, as well as fiction, preferentially from Africa and Asia. We believe that books constitute an unsurpassed way of understanding other people, and we want our publishing to reflect the societal developments in Sweden and the world alike.
Leopard Förlag was founded in 2001 by publisher Dan Israel and author Henning Mankell. Since 2017, Johan Ehrenberg is part-owner.
Our authors include names such as Henning Mankell, Stina Oscarsson, Mattias Gardell, Pierre Schori, Susan Faludi, Edward Snowden, Jonas Trolle, Maria-Pia Boëthius, Maryse Condé, Assia Djebar and Lo Kauppi.
ETC initiated their work towards climate compensation as early as in 2009 – an undertaking which involves Leopard Förlag ever since the company became part of ETC in 2017.
As a company, we believe that we are unable to fully compensate for climate change. Eating more vegetables, for example, does not implicate that we as a company are able to use company-owned cars driven by fossil fuels, or that we can compensate for air travel by planting a certain number of trees. One small compensational effort simply does not exclude other forms of emission! For this reason, we use electric cars during all business-related trips, and reward our staff with additional vacation days if they choose not to use air travel during their holidays.
Instead, we choose to view our climate work as climate investments! In order to manage the emissions that are inevitably produced from the combined production, offices, transport, and the private lives of our employees, we invest in new and clean solar energy. The solar cells in our solar park will continue to produce clean electricity for the next 40 years! Furthermore, this means that we reduce our CO2 emissions by 7 tons per 10,000 W of solar cells, compared to the current electricity systems employed in northern Europe.
In addition to this, we have chosen to increasingly switch from print to audio- and e-book production, in order to reduce the substantial footprint left by printed paper books. Audiobooks and e-books are of course not by definition climate neutral, since they require smartphones and/or other electronic devices to reach the consumer. Additionally, the data needs to be stored in server halls – these halls are often powered by electricity produced in not so environmentally friendly ways. It is for this reason that we are working on building server halls that are exclusively run on solar energy! Finally, ETC has Sweden’s only mobile subscription that is marked with Good Environmental Choice!
On a global scale, we know that it will never be enough just to do our bit for the climate. Therefore, we get especially happy when other companies and publishers, too, realize the importance of taking responsibility for their environmental impact! We view our climate investments as an ongoing process that can be constantly developed, improved and, hopefully, inspire others.
